Q. I would like to schedule my DMV drive test. When will I be able to do this?

A. There was a time after the Covid shutdowns where it had been extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get an appointment for the behind-the-wheel test at the SLO DMV. As of October 2021, openings in SLO resumed and are running smoothly with plenty of openings to choose from.

Q. I finished my Online Driver’s Ed and am ready to get my learner’s permit. Am I able to go to the DMV to take the written permit test?

A. Yes, learner permit tests are available as part of the REAL ID application process. You will need to first start the application online at the DMV website (click link below). You will receive a confirmation number in your email once you complete and submit the electronic application and then you will be able to finish up by going in person to the DMV field office. This confirmation number acts as an appointment. You may then walk-in to the DMV anytime, just make sure to allow enough time to complete everything before they close. (2 hours before closing is a safe bet.) A DMV employee will then be able to use your confirmation number to look up your application and finish the process.

Q. I heard the DMV has reopened all offices. Is this true?

A. Yes, all California DMV’s are open at this time. The opened locations are offering limited services. Please check the DMV website for more information.
