First stop: driver’s ed

If you are a teen under the age of 17-1/2 you must complete a driver's ed course before taking the written exam to get your permit. You may be as young as 15 to get started with your driver’s ed program. Drive2Pass North offers a convenient, DMV approved Online Driver's Ed course. Click here for more information about driver’s ed. Once you have completed this course and received your pink Certificate of Completion in the mail, you will then be ready to move on to the second stop.

*If you are over the age of 17-1/2, go directly to the second stop.

second stop: driver’s permit

You are now ready to go to the DMV to take the written test. Immediately upon passing this test you will be issued your driver’s permit. (Note: If you are under the age of 17-1/2, your permit will not be valid until your driving instructor signs it at your first behind-the-wheel driving lesson.) Click the appropriate age link below to find out exactly what to bring with you to DMV.

third stop: Behind-the-wheel Driving Lessons

(This is where I come in!) Your permit is not valid until you have completed your first behind-the-wheel lesson. Call or text (805) 698-0102 to schedule your lesson. I will sign your permit at your first lesson and then you will be allowed to begin practicing with your parents or another licensed adult that is at least 25 years old. For more information about Drive2Pass North's Behind-the-Wheel course please click here.

After you have held your permit for a minimum of 6 months, completed all your driving lessons (6 hours), and practiced with your parent or guardian for at least 50 hours, you will then be ready to move on to the fourth stop: getting your driver's license!

Fourth stop: driver’s License

This is a very exciting step for you; it's time to take the Behind-the-Wheel Drive Test. For this test you will need an appointment, no walk-ins are accepted. You may call the DMV at (800) 777-0133 to schedule your Behind-the-Wheel Drive Test or click here to schedule online.
Once you pass, SMILE, you are now a licensed driver!
