DMV Checklist for Written Test

(To get your permit)

Ages 17-1/2 and older:

You are not required to take driver's ed but you are required to have a permit in order to practice driving, take driving lessons, or take the behind-the-wheel test at the DMV. It would be wise for you to study prior to taking the written test to get your permit and there are several ways to study.

The Online Driver's Ed course is helpful and you are welcome to take it but you are not required to. You could opt to study on your own to prepare for the test. I suggest you read the DMV Handbook and take some free DMV practice tests to prepare. You may get a copy of the Driver's Handbook at your local DMV or click here to read the online version. There are also free online practice tests that are fun to do and are very helpful. Click here to take free practice tests.

Before heading to the DMV, you will need to go online to begin the REAL ID application process. At some point in the application process the DMV will give you a code that you will need to provide when you arrive at the DMV. (The code acts as your “appointment”.) Once you have your code and have gathered the needed documents, you may then visit a DMV office.

What you will need to bring to DMV to take your written test:

  • REAL ID Online Application code given to you

  • Proof of Identity (such as birth certificate/passport)

  • Social Security Card (or proof of social security number)

  • Two Proofs of Residency containing your name and address. (If your name is not on your address documents, show documents such as birth certificate or marriage license to trace your relationship to person whose name does appear on the residency documentation)

  • About $45 for the DMV

  • When you arrive at the DMV go to the START HERE window inside or, if they’re not allowing you in right away, go to the person under the umbrella outside by the front door to check-in
